There are three specific goals of the International Research Program:

  1. to support the expansion of existing efforts of CFAR investigators to conduct HIV-related research in international settings;
  2. to develop novel research programs that address questions of unique or particular relevance to international settings;
  3. to develop educational and training opportunities that enhance the capabilities of US and international investigators to conduct HIV research.

Because the International Program has both a geographic focus as well as its own scientific agenda, it will necessarily work to integrate many of the existing research efforts of other CFAR programs-Pathogenesis, Therapeutics, Vaccines and Epidemiology and Outcomes-and support their overseas efforts. In addition, the International Program will particularly support research in three specific research projects with significant implications for the international HIV epidemic: epidemiology and outcomes; operational research; and point-of-care diagnostics.
