The Program in Retroviral Therapeutics is dedicated to the development of innovative treatments for HIV infection and its complications. Membership in this Program comprises a broad cross-section of investigators from across the spectrum of basic science and clinical disciplines represented within the HU CFAR. The principal goal of this Program is to stimulate new multidisciplinary collaborative research aimed at addressing critical problems in the treatment of HIV/AIDS. The Program also seeks to foster the development of new investigators interested in clinical investigation and/or translational research related to HIV therapeutics.
The Program in Retroviral Therapeutics is directed by Dr. Daniel Kuritzkes, who was recruited by Partners and the HMS Division of AIDS to head the newly formed Section of Retroviral Therapeutics at HMS and to succeed Dr. Hirsch as PI of the Harvard Adult ACTU. Dr. Kuritzkes has extensive experience in the design and conduct of AIDS clinical trials and previously served as Chair of the HIV Disease Research Committee for the Adult ACTG. In addition to his expertise as a clinical investigator, Dr. Kuritzkes is also recognized as a leader in research on antiretroviral drug resistance, the focus of his laboratory work.
Current and planned collaborative research: There is a long history of research related to HIV therapeutics, involving investigators at each of the HU CFAR- affiliated institutions. Through both ACTG and non-ACTG clinical trials as well as basic science studies of mechanisms of antiviral efficacy, antiviral drug resistance, metabolic toxicities and others there are currently numerous collaborative projects. The Therapeutics Program will focus on promoting new areas of investigation and new collaborations.
