Infectious disease physicians have long been associated with diseases that affect the developing world, and this is particularly true in the era of HIV/AIDS. Among recent Infectious Disease (ID) fellows and applicants, there is a growing interest in finding opportunities to perform clinical work and research in international settings. This interest stems from both the desire to work on projects to benefit those most devastated by the HIV epidemic, and the desire to gain additional experience in treating HIV/AIDS and its associated opportunistic infections in international settings. As research priorities in HIV shift toward the devastating epidemic in Africa and elsewhere, there are increasing opportunities for ID fellows and recent fellowship graduates to become involved in international clinical and research projects. The Division of AIDS Office of International Programs (OIP) can serve as a resource to provide clinical and research opportunities for ID fellows and graduates. It may thereby increase the number of HIV specialists working internationally, and can help launch ID fellows on career paths in international HIV/AIDS research and treatment.

The Division of AIDS Office of International Programs recognizes the growing sense among medical students and residents that they are part of a wider international medical community, and together with Harvard Medical School and its affiliated hospitals, seeks to provide residents and students with opportunities to become involved in international HIV research, training, and care. The Office of International Programs will help residents and students find appropriate mentors for research or clinical training relating to the global HIV epidemic by maintaining an updated listing of Harvard faculty involved in International HIV work, and through programs offered directly through the Office.
